The only family in this archive whose garments are issued to people who did not choose the institution and cannot leave it. That single fact separates school dress from everything else here, and it is why arguments about school uniform never stay arguments about clothing for long.
The three chapters run in an unexpected order of age. Academic dress is medieval, unchanged in outline for six hundred years, and worn voluntarily for a few hours by adults. School uniform is Victorian, worn compulsorily for years by children, and revised constantly. Youth organisations sit between the two: uniform as something joined rather than imposed, which changes how it is worn more than how it is cut.
