Every type of land and food production in one place — 4 chapters, Agriculture, Forestry, Fishing and the rest, with the plates and an inventory to download.
Working the land produced the oldest garments in this archive and the ones least designed by anybody. The smock frock, the fisherman's oilskin and the butcher's apron were arrived at over generations rather than specified, and they are the clearest examples in the whole taxonomy of dress that evolved rather than being issued.
That makes this family the exception that defines the rest. Nothing here signals rank, nothing identifies an institution, and there is no issuer to please — only weather, blood, water and the hours. When these garments do become uniforms, it is because somebody outside the work imposed one: the Land Army armband, the abattoir's hygiene coat, the forestry service's badge.
