Collection: Science and Controlled Environments

This is the only family in the archive where the garment is not primarily about the person wearing it. A cleanroom suit exists to protect the room from the human body; a hazmat suit exists to protect the body from the room. In both cases the wearer is a contaminant or a casualty, and the clothing is a boundary between two things that must not meet.

That single inversion explains almost every design decision in the four chapters below — why the seams are sealed, why the hood is integral, why there are no external pockets, and why the garment is so often white. White here is not a claim about cleanliness, as it is in medicine. It is a detection surface: a chemist needs to see a spill the instant it happens.
