Everything in this family is dressed for an audience and for a rule book at the same time, and the two pull in opposite directions. A team strip has to be distinguishable from the opposing side at speed, which is a technical requirement written into competition regulations. It also has to be recognisable on a replica shirt in a shop, which is a commercial requirement that arrived a century later and now frequently wins.

The officials are the control group. A referee is dressed specifically not to be either team, in a colour chosen by elimination, and that is why officiating dress is the only clothing here that has become less distinctive over time rather than more.

Five chapters. The contents are public; the plates and the inventory are for subscribers.
